Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church
The Georgian Military Highway, Ananuri, Gudauri and the church at 2,170 m — driving times, how to get up to Gergeti, and why you should stay the night.
The drive is half the trip
Three stops earn their place:
- Ananuri Fortress, about an hour and a quarter out, a walled complex with two churches directly above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir.
- Gudauri, the ski resort at around 2,200 m, and the switchbacks up to it.
- The Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a curved concrete arc above a sheer drop, covered inside with a bright 1980s mosaic. It looks like nothing else in the Caucasus.
Getting up to the church
Three ways up:
- 4x4 transfer from the town square — the usual choice, twenty to thirty minutes on a rough track, easily arranged on the spot.
- Walk — about an hour and a half uphill through the forest, steep but not technical, and much the better experience if you are fit and have the time.
- Drive yourself only with genuine ground clearance, and not in winter.
Dress for the altitude too. It is materially colder and windier up there than in the town, in any month.
Stay the night
One night in Stepantsminda changes the trip entirely. You get Gergeti in the late afternoon when the light comes along the valley, and again at sunrise when Kazbek is most likely to be clear of cloud — mornings are considerably better than afternoons for actually seeing the mountain. Guesthouses in the town are plentiful and inexpensive, and the evening is quiet in a way the day is not.
Practical notes
- Season. June to September is the reliable window. The road is kept open through winter but can close briefly in heavy snow, and the walk up is not a winter walk.
- Altitude. Stepantsminda sits at about 1,740 m and the church at 2,170 m. Not high enough to be a medical concern for most people, high enough to leave you breathing harder than you expected on the climb.
- Cash. Take some. The town has limited ATMs and the 4x4 drivers prefer it.
- The border. The Russian frontier at Verkhny Lars is a few kilometres further north. There is no reason to go there and good reason not to.
Common questions
How long does it take to walk up to Gergeti?
About an hour and a half up through the forest and under an hour down. It is steep but not technical, and it is a much better experience than the 4x4 if you have the legs and the time.
Will I see Mount Kazbek?
Not guaranteed — it makes its own weather and is often in cloud. Early morning gives you much the best chance, which is the strongest argument for staying the night rather than arriving at midday.
Can I visit Kazbegi in winter?
Yes, and it is beautiful, but the road can close briefly in heavy snow and the walk up is not advisable. Use a 4x4 with a local driver and keep your plans flexible by a day.
