The Zagari Pass shortcut out of Svaneti closes for the winter about now — 160 km, four hours, and a few catches

The road from Ushguli over the pass to Lentekhi and on to Kutaisi is usually open from late May to mid-October and shut in winter for avalanche risk. It saves the long backtrack through Mestia and Zugdidi, but there is no scheduled transport on it and some rental contracts forbid it.
The season, and how little it is fixed
The pass is closed through winter because of altitude and avalanche risk, and the usual open window runs from roughly late May to mid-October. In 2026 it reopened fully in early June. Those dates move with the weather rather than a calendar: readers of the guide reported snow delays in May 2026 and icy stretches in late autumn 2025, with one turning back in November. The guide's own recommendation for the lowest rain risk is mid-July to late September. If you are travelling now, ask a guesthouse in Ushguli what the road is doing before you commit to it — that is the only current information there is.
Distances, surface and what car you need
Ushguli to Lentekhi over the pass is 73 km and about two hours; Lentekhi to Tsageri 22 km and about half an hour; Tsageri to Kutaisi 68 km and about an hour and a half. The guide gives the total as 160 km and roughly four hours, though the stages add up to 163. The Ushguli–Lentekhi section is sealed, asphalt and concrete, with short compacted gravel stretches and landslide zones of roughly 100 to 200 metres that are unsurfaced and signposted, some with shallow water running across. Four-wheel drive is not required and the guide's author saw all sorts of cars on it, but high ground clearance is recommended.
Practical limits worth knowing in advance
There is no regular marshrutka on this road — shared vans run via Mestia and Zugdidi instead — so the options are a private driver, a day trip sold over the pass, or your own vehicle. There are no formal fuel stations in Ushguli, so fill up in Lentekhi or Mestia. Parts of the route have no mobile coverage. And the detail that catches people out: some car rental companies forbid this road in their terms, which can void cover, so read the contract before you set off rather than after a landslide section. Risks the guide names are landslides and rockfall, worst in late spring and during or just after heavy rain, and ice in shaded sections early and late in the season.
