Vardzia rates 4.8 from 8,189 reviews, and shuts at six now

The cave monastery at Vardzia carries a Google rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 8,189 reviews and the same 4.8 from 614 reviews on Tripadvisor, as collected on Wanderlog's page for the site. More than seven thousand of those Google reviews are five-star. The travel writer Emily Lush, whose Vardzia guide is maintained for 2026, puts adult admission at 15 lari with an optional 15-lari audio guide and a 2-lari shuttle up to the cave entrance, and lists the current season's hours — 1 October to 14 November — as 10am to 6pm.

What the low scores are about

The distribution is lopsided — more than seven thousand five-star ratings against about a hundred and twenty at two stars or one — and the recurring complaints in the review summaries are the steep stairs and the lack of facilities on site. Neither is a complaint about the monastery; both are about arriving unprepared. The guide describes many stairs, narrow tunnels, uneven rock underfoot and some exposed ledges, and says the site is not wheelchair accessible. A visitor told that in advance is almost certainly one of the five-star reviews. A visitor who was sold a cathedral and got a cliff is one of the others.

Two hours, or three with the audio guide

The guide suggests allowing at least two hours at a steady pace, or about three with the audio guide, and warns that progress slows where crowds gather at the tunnels and the church. That is the number that decides whether Vardzia works as part of a longer day. From Akhaltsikhe it is about sixty kilometres on a sealed road that a normal car handles; from Tbilisi it is around two hundred and twenty-five kilometres and four to five hours each way, which makes a same-day return from the capital a very long day with two hours of walking in the middle of it.

Bring cash, and check the exit

Tickets are sold at an office by the car park, card is usually accepted, and there is no cash machine at the site, which is the kind of detail that turns a visit into a problem on a day when the terminal is down. One more thing worth confirming before you go: the guide reports that a rockfall in May 2026 near the Secret Tunnel closed the final exit tunnel, and that the closure was still in place when its author visited in June 2026. If it has not reopened, you walk back out through the complex rather than exiting at the top, which adds time to the two hours above.

Why this is an off-season place

The advice in the guide is to come in shoulder season or on a weekday morning, and the site's own calendar agrees: it keeps its longest hours in high summer and shortens them from October, down to a 5pm close from mid-November. Late autumn is therefore the trade — fewer people in the tunnels, less light to work with, and a shorter day to fit the drive into. For a tour operator building a route that includes Akhaltsikhe and Rabati fortress, the shorter winter hours are the binding constraint, and the itinerary has to start earlier than the summer version rather than simply be shortened.
