Vardzia: the cliff city visitors rate highly — if they avoid the midday crush

Vardzia is a monastery carved into a cliff face above the Mtkvari valley, and it is still an active religious site. Visitors consistently single out the scale of the medieval engineering, the frescoes in the Church of the Dormition and the landscape of the surrounding Meskheti region. It sits about 270 km from Tbilisi, so most people either join a full-day tour or pair it with an overnight stay in Borjomi or Akhaltsikhe, where Rabati Castle is the other big draw. Khertvisi Fortress, about 16 km to the north, is an easy stop on the way.

The recurring complaints are practical rather than about the site itself. Paths bottleneck at the tunnels and the church from mid-morning into the early afternoon, especially in July and August, when there is also little shade. Some tunnels are low and narrow, parts of the route run along exposed cliff edges, and the complex is not wheelchair accessible. Both guides reviewed here recommend arriving close to the 10:00 opening, and leaving at least two hours before closing if you come later.

Both guides list adult entry at GEL 15, with an optional audio guide for another GEL 15 and a small shuttle for GEL 2 that saves roughly a kilometre of uphill walking from the ticket office. Summer hours run 10:00–19:00 until the end of September, shortening to 18:00 in October and early November; prices and hours were current in the guides' 2026 editions and are worth rechecking before you go. Allow two to three hours. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and a torch, and dress for a working church: long trousers for men, a skirt and head covering for women.
