Uplistsikhe: two hours, about fifteen lari, and almost no shade
The rock-cut town near Gori holds a 4.7 rating across something like twelve thousand reviews, and a guide updated on 13 October prices entry at about five euros and reckons one to two hours is enough for the main caves. Reviewers praise the carved streets and the views over the Mtkvari valley. The recurring complaints are that many caves look alike, the ground is uneven, and there is barely any shade.
What is actually there
Uplistsikhe is a town cut into rock rather than a single cave. The guide's inventory includes cave streets and living quarters, a pillared great hall used for ceremony, rock-cut spaces for assembly and performance, wine presses and storage, cisterns and tunnels, and later Christian chapels layered over the earlier town. That layering is the reason to go: you can read several centuries of use in one hillside. It is also the reason the complaint about repetition keeps appearing, because the domestic caves genuinely do resemble one another.
Getting there without a car
From Tbilisi the guide points to a marshrutka from Didube station, roughly an hour and a half to two hours, at about five to ten euros for the round trip; a taxi is quoted at thirty to fifty. The second source describes the same journey as a minibus to Gori followed by a local taxi, and notes that direct public transport to the site itself is limited. In practice that means budgeting a connection at the Gori end rather than assuming a bus drops you at the entrance.
Smaller than the feed suggests
The writer's own warning is worth repeating: the site is smaller than social media makes it look, and it gets crowded in high season. One to two hours covers the main caves and structures. The ground is uneven with stairs and almost no shade, which makes midsummer afternoons the worst time to arrive, and the same page notes it can be slippery in winter. The practical window is early morning or late afternoon, and a late-October visit has the advantage of neither heat nor ice.
Prices to check on the day
The guide puts entry at about five euros and dates that figure to 13 October, while the second source gives about fifteen lari and lists optional extras, a wine tasting and an audio tour, at twenty lari each. Those are consistent with one another, but museum and heritage-site tickets in Georgia are adjusted without much notice, and opening hours vary between sources, with one giving ten in the morning to seven in the evening and another describing a sunset closing. Confirm both at the gate or by phone if the visit is the point of the day.
