Two dredgers and a breakwater: Anaklia is building toward 2029
The Anaklia deep sea port has moved into active construction. Two dredging vessels, the Tristao Da Cunha and the trailing suction hopper dredger Al-Idrisi, are deepening the marine basin, and work on the main breakwater is under way. The Deputy Minister of Economy says the schedule is being kept and the port will be fully operational in 2029. The Economy Minister has put state investment at USD 700 million, and USD 1.1 billion including private money, for an initial capacity of at least 600,000 TEU a year plus around 10 million tonnes of dry cargo.
What is physically happening on site
The Tristao Da Cunha was deployed first and the Al-Idrisi, a trailing suction hopper dredger, has since joined it in the marine basin. Together they are deepening the water the port will need, while construction of the main breakwater proceeds. Deputy Minister of Economy Tamar Ioseliani describes the project as having moved into an active construction phase and says works are progressing to schedule. No completion percentages have been published.

Speaking at the International Maritime Forum in Batumi, Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili put the state's investment at USD 700 million, rising to USD 1.1 billion once private investment is counted. Initial capacity is given as at least 600,000 TEU a year together with roughly 10 million tonnes of dry cargo. Those are the numbers to hold onto, because they define what the port would actually change rather than what it symbolises.

A port of this size reorganises the economy around it long before the first ship arrives: construction employment, road and rail connections, warehousing demand, and in time a different population in a part of the coast that has very little of one now. Neither statement names a contractor or consortium, publishes intermediate milestones, or gives a percentage of works completed. "On schedule" is an assurance rather than a measurement, and a project of this length will be judged on whether the breakwater and the first berths appear on time, not on the phrase.
