The headline held at 5.6% while transport went to 18.7%

Georgia's annual inflation was 5.6% in September 2026, exactly where it stood in August, with monthly inflation at 0.4% in both months. The stillness is in the total only. Transport prices were 18.7% higher than a year earlier, up from 15.2% in August; housing and utilities ran at 9.2%, restaurants and hotels at 7.3%, health at 8.0%. Food and non-alcoholic drinks slowed to 3.4% from 5.0%, and education costs fell 12.5%, which is what kept the headline from moving.

Why an unchanged number is not a quiet month

A headline that sits still for two months usually means the components are cancelling each other out, and that is what happened here. Transport accelerated by three and a half points; education fell twelve and a half. For a household those are not interchangeable, and for a business they are not either. A tour operator buying fuel and vehicle hire lives in the transport line. A guesthouse pays its bills out of the housing and utilities line. Nobody actually consumes the average, which is why the single figure is the least useful part of the release.

The lines a landlord should read first

Housing and utilities at 9.2% and rising matters more to a letting business than the headline does, because those costs usually sit on the owner's side of the arrangement while the rent is fixed for the length of the agreement. An annual contract signed in spring at a rent that looked comfortable then has absorbed most of a year of that increase by now. Where a long-term tenancy is being renewed, the arithmetic worth doing is not the headline rate but the change in the specific bills the owner actually pays, which is a different and larger number this year.

Transport is the tour operator's problem

Eighteen point seven per cent on transport, accelerating for a second month, lands hardest on anyone whose product is a vehicle and a driver. A day trip priced last winter at a margin of fifteen per cent does not have fifteen per cent of margin left if the transport input has moved by that much and the price has not. The two honest responses are to reprice for the coming season or to shorten the itinerary, and the one that fails is to hold the price and absorb it, because a season is long and the gap compounds. Private-experience hosts quoting in euros to guests abroad have a currency cushion, but it is a cushion and not a solution.

Food slowing is the one piece of good news

Food and non-alcoholic drinks slowed from 5.0% to 3.4%, and for a restaurant or a guesthouse that serves meals, this is the line that decides whether the menu can stay where it is. It also matters for anyone judging whether Georgia still reads as cheap to a visitor: food is the cost a tourist notices and remembers, more than utilities or rent, which they never see. One month of slower food inflation does not settle it, and restaurants and hotels at 7.3% are still rising faster than the headline, so the gap between what ingredients cost and what a meal out costs has not closed.
