Tbilisi signs for its first new tram line in 20 years: 7.5 km from Didi Dighomi to Didube

The contract was signed on 7 September 2026, Railway PRO reports, with Mayor Kakha Kaladze and Turkey's ambassador present. The builder is the EYE Consortium, made up of the Turkish firms Emre Ray, Yüksel and Erk. The price is EUR 95.6 million, or about GEL 287.65 million. It would be the first new tram line in the city since Tbilisi's old tram network closed in 2006.

The line is to run 7.5 km from the Didi Dighomi residential area in the north-west to the area around Didube metro station, through the Dighomi district, with 11 stations and a depot. The work is split into three stages — a concept design, a detailed design and construction — and the whole project is given four years. The 10 trams themselves are not in this contract; a separate tender is to be launched for them.

Didi Dighomi and the wider Dighomi area are among the parts of Tbilisi where many large new residential blocks have gone up, and today the nearest metro is some distance away for much of it. A tram to Didube would make those flats easier to reach and potentially easier to let. But the line exists only on paper today: design comes first, the trams still have to be bought, and four years is the target, not a guarantee. Buyers should be wary of paying a premium now for a line that has not been built, and sellers should not price as if it already runs.
