Tbilisi to Mestia is 465 kilometres and eight to ten hours — which is why Svaneti needs three nights, not one

The region sells itself. The logistics are what ruin the trip. Here is the shape of the journey, the seasonal gap, and the honest version to give a guest.
The distance decides the itinerary
Mestia sits about 465 kilometres from Tbilisi, and no road option gets there in less than eight to nine hours. A direct minibus runs most of a day with rest stops. The common alternative splits the journey — the morning train west to Zugdidi, which takes most of six hours, then a connecting minibus up to Mestia, roughly four hours more — and ends up in much the same place time-wise. A private transfer is the fastest road option and still runs to the better part of a day. Any itinerary that puts Svaneti in a two-night trip is selling a bus tour.
The flight is a plan, not a guarantee
There is a small-aircraft service to Mestia from an airfield north of Tbilisi, and in the air the journey collapses to a little over an hour. The catch is reliability: these flights are weather-dependent and cancellations are common enough that every serious guide tells travellers to hold a road fallback. For an operator, that means never building a tight connection on the back of the flight, and never selling it as the transport without saying what happens if it does not go. A guest who has heard the word "weather-dependent" in advance takes a cancellation as bad luck; one who has not takes it as your mistake.
Winter, and the self-drive question
The access road is subject to seasonal closure in the depths of winter, with snow and avalanche risk the usual cause, so a January or February booking needs its risk stated at the time of sale rather than discovered later. Self-driving is widely discouraged for anyone without real mountain-road experience, and rental agreements commonly prohibit continuing beyond Mestia up to Ushguli — a clause worth reading before promising a guest that stretch. Before travel, road conditions are worth checking with the national roads hotline rather than assumed from a map.
