Tbilisi is sounding out contractors for a 5.2 km metro extension — one station at each end of Line 1

Tbilisi Transport Company has run a market survey for extending metro Line 1 by 5.2 kilometres: 2.2 km towards Gldani and 3 km towards Varketili, with one new station on each. The work would be awarded design-build, so the contractor handles both. No cost has been set and no construction schedule has been published; an earlier attempt in April 2025 drew no result.
What is actually proposed
Line 1 is the Gldani–Varketili line, and the plan adds a tail at each end: 2.2 kilometres and one station beyond the current Gldani terminus, and 3 kilometres and one station beyond Varketili. The procurement covers the tunnels, the escalators, the station vestibules and platforms built for five-car trains. The survey was published through the Public Procurement Agency by Tbilisi Transport Company. Station names and precise sites have not been released.
The requirements were loosened after the first attempt failed
A survey run in April 2025 did not produce a contractor. For this round the track record demanded of bidders was cut: projects worth at least 50 million dollars over the previous three years, down from 100 million. Bidders must still have built at least two metro lines or ten stations. That is a deliberate widening of the field, and it suggests the first set of conditions left too few firms able to bid.
What it would mean for the two districts
Gldani and the Varketili side are where Tbilisi's cheaper housing is, and where the commute into the centre is longest. A station is the single change that most reliably alters the value of flats around it, because it converts a bus-plus-metro trip into a metro trip. Owners and buyers on those edges should note the stage this is at, though: a market survey is the step before a tender, not the start of construction. No price has been attached beyond the expectation that it runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars, and no completion date exists to plan around.
