Khinkali in Tbilisi: the halal one, the one with no minimum order, and the one open all night

Khinkali in Tbilisi: the halal one, the one with no minimum order, and the one open all night

The travel writer behind Wander-Lush keeps a Tbilisi restaurant guide, last updated on 2 August 2026, and three entries in it answer questions visitors actually ask. Leila's Khinkali in Mtatsminda cooks Kist and North Caucasus food and uses halal beef. Amo Rame Bani in Chugureti has no minimum order, so you can try two kinds. Cafe Daphna keeps its kitchen open all night at weekends. The guide bands all three at roughly 40 to 80 lari a head.

Leila's Khinkali, and why halal matters for a booking

Leila's Khinkali sits in Mtatsminda and cooks Kist and North Caucasus dishes rather than the standard Kartli repertoire, and the guide records that it uses halal beef. Its verdict on the dumplings is that they are "some of the best in the city". For a host or operator with Gulf or Turkish guests, this is one of the more useful addresses in the city, because the usual problem with recommending khinkali is not the quality of the kitchen but the pork. A guest who has been told the national dish is off the table for them generally has not been told that there is a version of it a short walk from Rustaveli.

The no-minimum-order detail is not trivia

Most khinkali houses sell in fives or by the plate, so a table of two ends up committing to one filling. Amo Rame Bani in Chugureti has no minimum order, which the guide points out lets you try both of its non-meat versions; it also rates its cheese khinkali with nadughi as the best meatless dumplings in the city. If you are introducing someone to the dish for the first time, or feeding a group with different diets, a place that will sell you three of one kind and three of another is worth more than a marginally better kitchen with a five-piece rule.

Late nights, and a reservation you should actually make

Cafe Daphna has branches on Rustaveli Avenue and in Old Tbilisi, keeps its kitchen open all night at weekends, and the guide says reservations are highly recommended. Its suggested order is the khinkali, mkhlovana and the salad with crispy sulguni. Somewhere that serves properly late is genuinely useful in a city where guests arrive on night flights and then want dinner at one in the morning, and it is the kind of detail that makes a host look like they know the place. The reservation note is worth taking seriously rather than treating as politeness.

Two more, and the price band to expect

Asi Khinkali has branches in Old Tbilisi, Chugureti and Saburtalo, and the suggested order is the Chef's Khinkali, the Georgian salad with radish, sesame oil, mint and pomegranate, and khachoerbo. Kaklebi, out at Tskneti on the western edge of the city, is the guide's pick for pork mtsvadi; it also notes that the chef Meriko Gubeladze left the management team in December 2024, which is the sort of change worth knowing before you recommend a place on an old reputation. All of these fall in the guide's middle price band, which it puts at roughly 40 to 80 lari a head and describes as approximate.
