Tbilisi–Baku passenger trains are back after a six-year break, and 200 more railcars are on order

The prime minister told a government meeting on 7 October that resuming the service matters for Georgia, and set it alongside the full commissioning of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line earlier this year. No timetable detail was given in the report.
What was said
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking at a government meeting on 7 October, said the resumption of rail passenger service between Tbilisi and Baku after a six-year break matters greatly to Georgia. He placed it next to the full commissioning of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway, which he had described a few months earlier as an event of great importance for the country's international transit role. The report carries no departure times, frequency or journey time, so anyone planning to use the service should check with Georgian Railway directly rather than work from the announcement.
The rolling stock behind it
Kobakhidze said 200 railcars have already been bought, with a further 200 railcars and about 50 new locomotives planned for delivery in the coming months. That is a substantial renewal of a fleet by the standards of a network this size, and it is the part of the announcement with the longest tail: new carriages change what the railway can offer on domestic routes as well as cross-border ones, and locomotives are what limit how much freight the corridor can actually move, as against how much the corridor is said to be capable of.
Why it reaches property and tourism
A direct passenger train to Baku widens the catchment for weekend visitors and for the kind of business traveller who will not take a short flight. For hosts in Tbilisi it is a modest but real addition to arrivals that do not depend on airline capacity, which is worth noting in a year when regional air disruption has been named as a drag on tourism revenue. For anyone holding commercial or logistics property along the rail corridor, the rolling-stock order matters more than the passenger service: capacity that is actually delivered, rather than announced, is what turns a transit route into tenant demand.
