Getting to Svaneti this autumn: a year of road interruptions, and what the flight option really offers

Travel And Tour World, in a piece published on 17 September 2026, lists this year's Georgian Roads Department notices for the Svaneti roads. The Kala–Ushguli section was shut by heavy snow and avalanche risk in late February and by rockfall in late March and mid-April. In late July, flooding near the Sakdari bridge and landslides disrupted routes in the Babili–Lasdili area. From 28 to 30 August a landslide near the Sakdari bridge led to restrictions on larger passenger vehicles — buses with more than eight seats and a gross weight over five tonnes.

Mestia is about 460 km from Tbilisi. Georgia Spirit's guide (reviewed July 2026) puts the drive at roughly seven to nine hours on a road that is paved throughout but has demanding bends in the final gorge. The budget options are a direct minibus from Tbilisi's Didube station, which takes nine to ten hours, or the overnight train to Zugdidi followed by a three-hour-plus minibus up the valley — around 13 hours door to door.

The only scheduled service is Vanilla Sky's flight from Natakhtari airfield, about 25 km north of central Tbilisi — not the international airport. The flight takes around 40 minutes and runs several times a week, daily in the June–September peak, according to Georgia Spirit. It is small-plane flying under visual flight rules, so it depends heavily on the weather, and Travel And Tour World notes a baggage allowance of 15 kg per passenger including hand luggage. It is a great way in when it flies, but not something to hang a same-day connection on.

Build a spare day into any Svaneti itinerary, especially one that includes Ushguli or ends with an international flight. Check the Roads Department's notices before setting off, and if you are booking the flight, pack to the 15 kg limit and have a road fallback in mind. Guesthouses and tour operators can save guests a lot of stress by sending this information before arrival and by keeping flexible cancellation terms for weather days.
