Visitor numbers fell 5% in the second quarter. What each visitor spent fell almost twice as fast

The statistics office recorded about 1.3 million foreign visitors between April and June 2026, down 5.2% on the same quarter a year earlier, while their spending came to roughly 3 billion lari, down 13.3%. The arithmetic in between is the figure that matters for anyone with money in Georgian hospitality: average spending per visit fell 9.2%, to about 1,922 lari. Russia supplied 328,900 visitors, or 25.1% of the total, with Turkey at 16.9% and Armenia at 10.8%.

Spend per head is the line that reaches a landlord

Visitor counts are the headline and spend per visit is the business. A 9.2% fall in average spending, to around 1,922 lari a visit, works through the chain in a specific order: shorter stays, cheaper accommodation choices, fewer paid experiences. A short-let owner feels it as pressure on nightly rate and on minimum stays before they see it in occupancy, because a guest trading down books the same number of nights at a lower price rather than cancelling. If your rate held steady this year while your booking lead time shortened, this is the number that explains it.

A quarter of visitors from one country is a concentration, not a cushion

Russia at 25.1%, Turkey at 16.9% and Armenia at 10.8% is more than half the quarter from three neighbours. For an investor, that is the risk line in the release. Arrivals concentrated in nearby markets are cheap to attract and quick to disappear, because the trip is short enough that the decision is made close to the date and reversed just as easily. The counterweight is the long-haul and European segment, which costs more to reach and books further out, and which is the part of the mix that makes a hospitality business forecastable rather than reactive.

What this does and does not say about whether to invest

One weak quarter is not a verdict on a sector, and a lari figure moves with the exchange rate as well as with behaviour, so a fall measured in lari and a fall measured in the visitor's own currency are not the same fall. What the quarter does establish is that the easy assumption — more visitors every year, each spending a bit more — did not hold this time. An investment case built on both rising at once needs a version that still works when one of them does not, and the honest test of any hospitality projection is what it looks like with spend per visit flat for three years.
