Rtveli 2026: how to actually get into a harvest, and what it costs

Kakheti, the main wine region, picks from late August into October. Kartli follows through September and October, Imereti starts from late September, and Racha runs into October and sometimes November. The precise start shifts with the weather and with each grower's own reading of the fruit, so no one publishes a date far ahead. September in Kakheti is the least risky bet for a visitor who has to book travel in advance.

The first is a working family harvest, reached through a guesthouse or a tour operator who actually knows the household. The second is a scheduled visitor day at an established winery, with fixed dates you can plan around. The third is a festival — the Gurjaani wine festival is set for 10 October 2026, with more than a hundred producers pouring. The first gives you the real thing and the least control over timing; the third gives you certainty and a crowd.

Organised harvest days including transfers from Tbilisi are quoted in the range of roughly 220 to 410 GEL per person, with online marketplaces pricing higher. A guesthouse room in Telavi sits around 60 to 75 GEL a night. The day itself starts early with cutting, moves the fruit to the marani, crushes it in the wooden satsnakheli and settles it into qvevri, then turns into a long table of bread, cheese, mtsvadi and toasts. Closed shoes, and clothes you do not mind ruining.

Arrange it. A harvest is a working day for the family doing it, not an attraction with a gate, and arriving unannounced at a vineyard puts the host in an awkward position. Book through a guesthouse, an operator or the winery itself, base yourself in Telavi rather than driving out and back from Tbilisi, and keep a day of slack in the plan — do not tie a non-refundable flight to one exact date.
