Georgia's protected areas took about 900,000 visitors in eight months, and earned 48% more

The Agency of Protected Areas reported around 900,000 visitors between January and August 2026, with its own revenues 48% higher than the same period a year earlier. Georgian citizens made up 41% of those visitors, so the majority came from abroad. The three most visited sites were Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Mtirala National Park — all of them in the west of the country.
Revenue grew faster than anything else in the release
The headline is the visitor count, but the figure with the most information in it is the 48% rise in the agency's own revenues. Entry fees, boat rides, guide services and the rest are priced in lari and collected at the gate, so a jump of that size reflects some mixture of higher tariffs, more paid add-ons per visitor and a shift towards visitors who pay the foreigner rate. For a guesthouse or a tour business near a park, the lesson is that the willingness to pay for the paid part of a day out is holding up, even in a year when average spending per foreign visit has been under pressure.
Three in five visitors were not Georgian
Georgian citizens accounted for 41% of visits, leaving the larger share to international visitors. That split matters because the two groups behave differently on the ground: residents come at weekends, in their own cars, often without buying a guided service, while foreign visitors arrive mid-week on organised transport and buy more of the paid extras. A business built only around the weekend crowd is competing on price in a two-day window; one that can serve a Tuesday group is working the part of the week where the paying majority actually shows up.
All three leaders are in the west
Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Mtirala National Park sit within a few hours of one another, between Imereti, Samegrelo and Adjara. That concentration is why a Kutaisi or Batumi base sells itself so easily as a touring centre and why Kutaisi airport arrivals convert into park tickets so readily. It also means the competitive pressure on accommodation in that corridor comes from the whole corridor, not just the nearest town: a guest choosing between Martvili and Zugdidi for the night is comparing two places that both work for the same next morning.
Eight months, not twelve
The figure covers January to August, which is almost the whole of the walking season and none of the winter. Much of the park network thins out sharply from November, and the sites that stay open depend on road conditions rather than on demand. If you are planning a stay around protected areas, the practical reading of these numbers is that they describe a season rather than a year, and the quieter, cheaper edges of it — late April and the second half of September — carry most of the same scenery with a fraction of the queue.
