Prometheus Cave is 40 lari and 15°C inside; Okatse is 30 plus a jeep — and doing both by marshrutka does not work

Two of the busiest sights near Kutaisi, with the prices, the walking distances and the restrictions a guest should hear before they book, from a guide updated in April 2026.
Prometheus Cave
Entry is 40 lari, with an underground boat ride available for an extra 30. The visitor route is a 1.4-kilometre walking trail through a complex that runs to about 11 kilometres in total, so you see a fraction of it. Inside it holds around 15°C with humidity near 98 per cent — cool enough that a guest in summer clothes will notice, and damp enough that camera lenses fog. The paths are dimly lit and there are stairs. Signage is sparse, which is why the guide rates having a guide as useful; a park guide is included in the entrance. It sits 20 kilometres northwest of Kutaisi, about half an hour by car.
Okatse Canyon
Entry is 30 lari, with an optional off-road transfer to the canyon itself for 12. The walk is about 2 kilometres, mostly flat but with stairs, along an elevated walkway with viewing platforms over a 2-kilometre section of gorge. One restriction matters more than any other: children under 1.2 metres tall are not admitted, which is worth telling a family before they drive an hour each way. It is 50 kilometres north of Kutaisi, about an hour by car. In winter it is more likely to close when it rains or snows, and sections get roped off when the walkway is wet. Midday in high summer is the one time the guide advises against, on heat.
Why not both on public transport
Each is reachable cheaply on its own. Prometheus takes a van to Tskaltubo and another to the cave, about 3.20 lari in total and around 45 minutes. Okatse takes a van to Khoni, another to Gordi and then a 2-kilometre walk — about 4 lari, but over two hours. Chaining the two in one day on those connections is, in the guide's assessment, impractical, which is why most visitors take a tour or hire a driver. A tour covering two or three sites plus lunch runs a full day; one reader who did Okatse, Martvili and Prometheus together reported a ten-hour day, and the all-in cost with entrances, boat rides and the Okatse jeep came to roughly 200 lari a head including lunch.
What a host should put in writing
Three lines save most of the complaints. The height limit at Okatse, because turning a family away at the gate after an hour's drive is the worst version of this day. The temperature in the cave, because guests arrive in summer clothes. And the fact that both the cave boat and the Okatse transfer are optional extras, not included in the entrance, so the price a guest hears from you matches the price they pay at the desk. Prices and rules at protected sites do change — these are the figures in a guide updated in April 2026, worth re-checking before each season.
