Mestia: the cheapest lift pass in Georgia and the longest drive to reach it

Mestia: the cheapest lift pass in Georgia and the longest drive to reach it

Svaneti's two ski areas, Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, are scheduled to open for the 2026/27 season on 20 December, with 14 lifts and 37 km of groomed trails between them and a top altitude of 3,168 m at Tetnuldi. Last season's adult day pass was 50 lari, against 70 at Gudauri and 55 at Bakuriani; prices for the coming season have not been confirmed. The catch is access: Mestia is about 450 km from Tbilisi, roughly ten hours by road.

Two areas, two different skiers

Hatsvali sits just above the town among trees and suits beginners, with a plateau to practise on. Tetnuldi is the serious half: wide open runs, a high point of 3,168 m, and terrain aimed at experienced skiers and freeriders. Historically Hatsvali closes in late March while Tetnuldi can hold snow into April, so a late-season trip is really a Tetnuldi trip. Closing dates for this season have not been announced.

The price comparison, and what it leaves out

On last season's published rates, a day on the slopes in Mestia cost 50 lari for an adult and 25 for a child, with a seven-day MultiSki pass at 370 lari and a season pass covering four Georgian resorts at 650 lari, plus 5 lari for the card itself. Gudauri was the most expensive at 70 lari a day and much the largest, with around 80 km of trails. Bakuriani sat between them. But the lift pass is the smallest line in a Svaneti budget. Tetnuldi is 15 to 20 km from Mestia, 40 to 60 minutes each way, ride-hailing apps do not operate there, and shared transfers start from around 40 lari a person.

Getting there is the decision

Tbilisi to Mestia is roughly 450 km and about ten hours of driving, commonly broken at Kutaisi or Zugdidi. The Zugdidi road stays open through the winter, shared minivans run but can be cancelled after heavy snow, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle with an experienced driver is the realistic choice rather than a rental car. Domestic flights from Natakhtari or Kutaisi exist but are hard to book and are often cancelled in winter weather. Build a spare day into any itinerary that has to connect onward to a flight.

Who it is for

Mestia has the least terrain of Georgia's three main ski destinations and by far the hardest journey, so it does not win on skiing alone. What it offers instead is quiet slopes, high alpine scenery and the medieval tower houses of Svaneti within walking distance of the lifts. For a guesthouse or operator in the region that mix is the selling point, and the audience is the traveller who wants several days in one place rather than a weekend of maximum vertical. Treat the 20 December date as a plan rather than a guarantee, since individual lifts open with the snow.
