Mestia is getting a new terminal — the road to Ushguli is still the part that decides your itinerary

On 5 September 2026 a tender went out for a new single-storey passenger terminal at Mestia, with arrivals and departures separated, proper passenger services, commercial space and more processing capacity than the current building has. For a strip that handled 9,759 passengers on 333 flights in 2024, that is a meaningful upgrade in comfort and in how many people can be moved through in an hour.

Flights into Mestia are weather-dependent and a terminal does not change that. Neither does it touch the road beyond the town. The route up to Ushguli is regularly disrupted by snow, avalanche, rockfall, flooding and landslide, and large coaches are the first vehicles to be stopped. The reporting is careful on this point: there is no verified figure showing Svaneti has crossed an overtourism threshold. The problem is a gap between how many people the gateway can land and how reliably the mountain can absorb them.

Anyone selling a fixed-date Svaneti itinerary is selling a route with a real cancellation probability attached, and the honest way to price it is to carry the contingency rather than pass it to the guest on the day. In practice that means a road alternative to the flight, a spare night in Mestia that costs you nothing if unused, small vehicles rather than a coach for the Ushguli leg, and a written weather clause the guest reads before paying — not a phone call from a closed pass.

Late September and October give Svaneti its clearest air and its emptiest guesthouses, and the towers photograph better against autumn colour than against summer haze. They are also the weeks when the first snow can arrive early and shut the high road. Sell the shoulder season for what it is — quieter, cheaper, sharper light, and a genuine chance the last village is out of reach — and the guests who book it will be the ones who do not mind.
