Martvili rates 4.5 from 4,894 Google reviews — and the parking is the complaint

The turquoise canyon an hour from Kutaisi rates well and reads worse up close. Two of the recurring complaints are avoidable if you know about them before you arrive.

The ratings and the split

Google rates Martvili Canyon 4.5 out of 5 across 4,894 reviews; Tripadvisor rates it 4.0 across 163. The praise is consistent and specific — clear turquoise water, waterfalls, green cliffs, well-kept walking paths and viewpoints, a refreshing atmosphere that works for families, and the boat ride and zipline as added activities. Several reviewers mention the canyon's history as the Dadiani family's private bathing place, which is the sort of detail a guide adds and a signboard does not. The half-point gap between the two platforms tracks the complaints rather than the scenery.

The two avoidable problems

The first is parking. Multiple reviewers describe drivers and parking attendants pressing visitors into paid parking that sits a long way from the entrance, while at least one says you can drive up to the entrance itself. Know that before you hand money to anyone waving you into a field. The second is the boat: it is not always operating. Rides are cancelled when the water is high or the current is strong, which in practice means spring and the days after heavy rain, and there is a height and age limit — the published guidance excludes children under five or shorter than a metre. If the boat is the reason you are going, the trip is weather-dependent in a way the photographs do not suggest.

Prices, and why they disagree

A 2024 operator guide lists entry at 20 lari for adults, 6 lari for children aged 6 to 18, free under 6, and 11 lari for Georgian citizens and residents, with the boat at 15 lari for a 15 to 20 minute paddle over about 300 metres of river. A reviewer on the aggregator reports paying 40 lari per person at the tourist centre. Those two figures cannot both be current, and the older guide is now about two years old, so treat 20 lari as a floor rather than a quote. There is also mention of a combined pass covering Okatse Canyon and waterfall, which is worth asking about at the ticket desk if you are doing both in one day.

Hours, season and the way in

Listed hours are 10:00 to 18:00 from March to September and 10:00 to 17:00 from November to February, with the last boat leaving about half an hour before closing; the aggregator shows 10am to 6pm daily. The canyon stays open year round, and autumn and winter are the quiet seasons — which, given that crowding is one of the standing complaints, is an argument for going out of season rather than against it. From Kutaisi it is about 50 km and one to one and a half hours: a minibus from the bus station costs around 5 lari but leaves you roughly 5 km short, a taxi starts around 70 lari, and there is free parking near the entrance notwithstanding the attendants.
