Kyrgyzstan bought more from Georgia than China did — and cars were a quarter of everything sold

Statistics office data for January to August 2026 put Kyrgyzstan first among Georgia's export markets at 577.6 million dollars, ahead of China at 543.7 million and Russia at 500.7 million. On the import side Türkiye led with 1.9186 billion dollars, then Russia at 1.5318 billion and the United States at 1.5105 billion. Passenger cars alone were 24.9% of exports, at 1.3477 billion dollars.

The ranking says less about demand than it looks

A small country whose single largest export line is passenger cars, at 24.9% of the total, is not selling its own manufacturing. Georgia does not build cars; it moves them. That one fact reframes the league table: Kyrgyzstan at 577.6 million dollars is a destination for goods passing through, and the position can change quickly when a customs rule or a payment channel changes somewhere else entirely. Petroleum and petroleum products at 688.9 million and precious metal ores at 403.1 million are the next two lines, which together describe an economy that earns by handling and extracting rather than by making.

On the import side, one neighbour dominates

Türkiye supplied 1.9186 billion dollars of imports in the eight months, well clear of Russia at 1.5318 billion and the United States at 1.5105 billion. Anyone building or renovating here already knows this from their invoices: tiles, sanitaryware, glazing, cement products and finishing materials come down the Black Sea coast road in Turkish trucks. It is the single most direct line between a currency move and a Georgian construction budget, and it is worth asking a contractor which of their quoted costs are denominated in lira or dollars before signing a fixed-price contract.

Concentration, measured

The top ten export partners accounted for 68.8% of exports and the top ten import partners for 70.2% of imports. Roughly seven dollars in ten, each way, runs through ten counterparties. That is normal for an economy this size, but it is the reason a single bilateral disruption — a border procedure, a sanctions change, a payments restriction — reaches Tbilisi faster than it would reach a larger market. An investor weighing Georgian property against a bigger neighbour's is pricing, among other things, that shorter transmission line.

Read this table again next year

Partner rankings driven by transit flows are among the least stable numbers a small economy produces. A market that is first this year can be fourth the next without anything changing in Georgia itself. The durable reading is not which country is on top but the structure underneath: a heavy dependence on moving vehicles and fuel, a single dominant supplier of building materials, and a short list of counterparties on both sides. Those three features are what actually shape costs and currency risk for someone holding property here.
