Bagrati Cathedral sits a little lower at 4.3 from nearly 480 reviews, Okatse Canyon at 4.4 and the city market at 4.4. Sataplia, the cave and nature reserve, rates 3.9 — the weakest score among the main sights, and a useful one to know before building an itinerary around it.

Reviewers writing about Gelati return to two things: the wall paintings inside, and the view out over the valley from the site. It is a monastery complex rather than a single church, which is why visitors tend to spend longer there than they planned. Motsameta, smaller and set on a cliff above a river bend, earns its equal score on setting rather than scale.

The three sit close enough together that a driver can cover Bagrati, Gelati and Motsameta in a morning and still return to town for lunch. Monasteries are working religious sites: shoulders and knees covered, headscarves for women at the church door, and quiet inside. Photography rules differ between buildings, so ask rather than assume, particularly where frescoes are concerned.

Kutaisi's usefulness is its position: the international airport is close, and Imereti's canyons and caves sit within an hour. That makes it a genuine one-night stop between Tbilisi and the coast rather than a detour, which is how a short Georgia itinerary picks up a second region without adding a travel day. Guests arriving on a late flight will want the monastery loop the following morning, not the same afternoon.
