Gonio fortress rates 4.0 from 195 reviews and takes about an hour

The Roman fort at Gonio, about fifteen kilometres down the coast from Batumi, holds a 4.0 out of 5 rating from 195 reviews on Tripadvisor. Visitors consistently praise the kept grounds, the open excavation trenches, the small museum of finds and the view from the walls. The recurring complaints are the daytime heat, the steep tower steps, and that not much stands inside the walls. Reviewers put a visit at between half an hour and a little over an hour.

What visitors say is actually there

The reviews settle into agreement on a few points. The outer walls and towers stand and are well kept, with stone paths laid through the site; several excavation trenches are open to view rather than backfilled; and a small museum on site displays what has been dug up. The towers can be climbed, and the view is the thing most often mentioned as worth the stairs. Reviewers also pass on the local tradition that the Apostle Matthew is buried here, which is a legend attached to the site rather than an archaeological finding, and more than one notes how quiet the grounds are early in the day.

The complaints are practical, not disappointed

Heat comes up repeatedly: the site has little shade and the walk is in the open, and at least one reviewer recommends an evening visit instead. The tower steps are described as high and steep, which is worth knowing if you are bringing older relatives or small children. And the honest caveat from several reviewers is that the interior is mostly empty ground between standing walls, so anyone arriving expecting a Roman city will be reading information boards rather than walking through streets. That is also why the visit fits comfortably into an hour and leaves the rest of the day for the coast.

The reviews do not agree on admission. Two from 2024 report ten lari per adult, one from 2022 mentions five, and a July 2025 review says entry was free. That spread probably reflects genuine changes to the museum-reserve's pricing over the years rather than inconsistent gatekeeping, but it means a figure quoted in a blog is not a figure to plan around. The Adjara regional tourism site lists the fortress among its official sights and is the place to confirm the current fee and opening hours before setting out from Batumi.
