Getting to Sighnaghi and Telavi without booking a tour

Getting to Sighnaghi and Telavi without booking a tour

Kakheti has no passenger train, so the wine region is reached by marshrutka or shared taxi, and both are cheap enough that a day trip costs less than lunch. Minivans to Sighnaghi leave the Navtlugi terminal at Samgori for 15 GEL and take two to two and a half hours; shared taxis from Isani run 25-30 GEL a head and do it in an hour and a half. Telavi is served from both Navtlugi and Ortachala for 12-15 GEL. Fares drift, so treat these as the shape of the trip rather than a quote.

Tbilisi to Sighnaghi

Marshrutkas leave the Navtlugi terminal at Samgori metro at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 6pm, with an extra 7am departure added in summer. The fare is 15 GEL and the trip takes two to two and a half hours; arrive at least half an hour early. Shared taxis gather on the street east of Isani metro, charge 25-30 GEL a person or 100-120 GEL for the whole car, and cover the road in an hour and a half to two hours, with some seven-seat minivans asking 20 GEL a head. Cars fill quickly from about 10am. A booked GoTrip transfer starts at 170 GEL per car.

Tbilisi to Telavi, and two stations to choose from

From Navtlugi, vans leave at 9am, 11am, 1.15pm, 2.45pm and 4.45pm for 15 GEL, taking over three hours on the Kakheti Highway. From the upper level of Ortachala bus station there are about a dozen departures daily between 8.20am and 5pm for 12-15 GEL; tickets come from the white kiosk or online through tkt.ge or biletebi.ge. Shared taxis from Isani cost 20 GEL a person and usually take the Gombori Pass, which is shorter and more scenic. Vans drop passengers at the new bus station near the bazaar.

Coming back, which is where people get stuck

Sighnaghi to Tbilisi runs at 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 4pm and 6pm, ending at Samgori or Isani, with a GoTrip transfer from 160 GEL. Telavi is easier: marshrutkas leave the New Bus Station at least hourly from 9am to 9pm for 15 GEL, taking two to three hours, and shared taxis ask 20 GEL a head, with GoTrip from 130 GEL. The practical rule is to check the last departure before you order a second bottle, because the Sighnaghi timetable thins out well before the Telavi one.

Two warnings worth taking seriously

First, some Sighnaghi marshrutkas terminate in Tsnori rather than the town itself, which leaves a taxi of about 10 GEL to finish the journey; confirm the final stop with the driver before you sit down. Second, the quoted fares genuinely vary between passengers and seasons, and winter weather stretches the times — one traveller in December reported fog and snow turning the Sighnaghi run into a two-hour crawl. Ask at the station rather than relying on a figure read in advance, including this one.
