Georgia's domestic flights leave from Natakhtari, not Tbilisi airport

Georgia's domestic flights leave from Natakhtari, not Tbilisi airport

The national tourism portal lists Natakhtari, a small airfield 20 to 30 minutes' drive from Tbilisi, as the main departure point for domestic flights — not Tbilisi International. Mestia in Svaneti is served on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays; Ambrolauri in Racha on Fridays or Sundays; and Kutaisi runs a Mestia service on Wednesdays. Tickets are sold in advance online, and the portal warns to check for weather delays before setting out.

The airfield most visitors have never heard of

Natakhtari sits 20 to 30 minutes' drive north of Tbilisi, on the Mtskheta side of the city, and it is where the scheduled domestic network operates from. The portal says a transfer from Tbilisi is provided, with the details sent after booking. This is the single most common mistake made by visitors arranging a Svaneti trip from abroad: they assume the flight leaves from the international airport and build their timings around the wrong place.

The schedule as published

Natakhtari to Mestia operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with the return legs on the same days. Kutaisi to Mestia runs on Wednesdays only, which is the useful one for anyone arriving on a low-cost flight into Kutaisi. Natakhtari to Ambrolauri in Racha runs Friday or Sunday, with an air taxi offered alongside the scheduled service. Batumi appears on the destination list without a published schedule, and scenic flights are offered as a separate product.

What it replaces

The portal says that once you reach the airport you should be at your destination within about an hour. The alternative to Mestia is a long drive through Zugdidi, and to Ambrolauri a winding road through Imereti. For a tour operator building a four-day itinerary, the flight is what makes Svaneti or Racha possible inside a short trip rather than the whole of it; for a guesthouse owner up there, the flight days are the days bookings cluster on.

Book early, and expect weather

Tickets are sold in advance online through the operator's ticketing site, and the portal's own advice is to check whether a flight has been delayed by bad weather before travelling to the airport. Mountain airstrips are weather-dependent by nature, and the sensible way to plan is to treat the flight as the preferred option with a road journey held in reserve, rather than as a fixed point in a tight itinerary. No fares are published on the portal.
