Four hours to Batumi by train, a new Akhaltsikhe line, and the Kukushka back in January 2027
Georgia's railway modernisation is quietly redrawing what a car-free itinerary can cover. For anyone selling trips or hosting guests without a driver, the new routes matter more than the rolling stock.
What is changing on the passenger side
The railway's modernisation programme, as set out in May 2026, covers rolling stock and stations but the part travellers will notice is the timetable. Summer services are described as carrying passengers from Tbilisi to Batumi in four hours. New passenger routes named include Tbilisi–Kutaisi and Tbilisi–Akhaltsikhe, and the narrow-gauge Borjomi–Bakuriani line — the Kukushka — is expected back in January 2027.
Why four hours is the number that matters
At the end of 2025 the prime minister said the Tbilisi–Batumi journey would be cut by about thirty minutes by summer 2026. Four hours city centre to city centre puts the train genuinely ahead of driving the same route on a summer weekend, once you count the queues out of Tbilisi and parking at the other end. That changes the arithmetic for a guest who was told they needed a car.
The routes open new itineraries
A direct Tbilisi–Akhaltsikhe service puts the Samtskhe-Javakheti side of the country — the cave cities, the fortress, the road south — within reach of people who will not hire a car. Tbilisi–Kutaisi does the same for Imereti, where the monastery loop and the caves already sit close together. And the Kukushka is a destination in its own right rather than a way of getting somewhere: a slow narrow-gauge climb that sells itself to families and to photographers.
How to use this before it is finished
Some of this is delivered and some is a plan with a date attached, and the Kukushka's January 2027 target is the kind of date that can move. The safe way to build it into what you sell is to quote the trains that run today, describe the rest as expected, and check the operator's own timetable before publishing a fixed departure. A guest who misses a connection because a brochure was written from an announcement will remember the brochure, not the railway.
