Georgia's autumn runs downhill: high Svaneti now, Racha through October, Kakheti into November

A travel writer's altitude-by-altitude timing guide, updated at the end of September. The useful part for a host is which passes close when.
The timing rule is altitude, not the calendar
Emily Lush, writing on Wander-Lush and updated on 28 September 2026, sorts Georgia's autumn by elevation rather than by month. Above about 2,000 metres — upper Svaneti, Khevsureti, Tusheti, upper Adjara — the window is late September into the first half of October, and snow can shut high passes by late October. Mid-elevation Racha, Kazbegi and Truso, Borjomi-Kharagauli and Abastumani hold through October with more dependable access for drivers and walkers. The lowlands and wine country — Kakheti, Imereti, Tbilisi — come good late October into November. Her own pick for the most reliable foliage overall is early to mid October.
Specific drives, with the dates attached
In Racha, peaking mid October to early November, the named stops are Shaori Reservoir, the Tskhrajvari lookout path and the short walk to the Sairme Pillars in Lechkhumi, with the Oni-to-Sachkhere drive over the Khikhata Pass given as about 75 minutes. In upper Svaneti, late September to mid October, the Ushguli-to-Lentekhi crossing via the Zagari Pass is typically open until mid-October — which is the hard deadline in the whole guide. Near Tbilisi, the 112-kilometre road to Tianeti through Sabaduri Forest takes about two and a half hours and peaks early to mid October. Borjomi-Kharagauli holds latest of the mountain options, mid October to mid November, and the Kukushka train is suspended, so the road is the way in.
Access warnings a guest will not expect
Two in the guide are worth passing on before anyone sets off. Dolochopi Basilica near Kvareli has no road: you walk across the riverbed, and Lush advises taking your shoes off, noting one section that can be deeper. The Gombori Pass between Tbilisi and Telavi is used by marshrutkas but is described as windy, which matters for anyone prone to car sickness. Javakheti and the lakes at Paravani, Saghamo and Madatapa, plus Dashbashi Canyon near Tsalka, need your own vehicle. Vashlovani and the badlands around Dedoplistskaro are off-road touring rather than a day trip, with transhumance visible in early October.
How to sell the season without overpromising
Foliage dates are weather, not a timetable, and a guide that says a pass is typically open until mid-October is telling you about the average year. If you take autumn bookings, the safe structure is a low-altitude anchor with a high-altitude option: base a guest in Kakheti or Imereti, where the colour arrives last and the roads stay open, and sell the mountain day as conditional. That way an early snowfall in Svaneti costs you an excursion rather than the whole itinerary. It is also worth telling guests that in Kakheti September is still mostly green, since that is the month many of them assume is autumn.
