EU and UK visits hit a record in the first half, while total travellers fell 3.3%

Georgia earned 1.9 billion dollars from tourism in the first half of 2026, two percent less than a year earlier. International traveller visits fell 3.3 percent to 3,050,173, while tourist visits were essentially flat at 2,272,964. Inside those totals, visits from the European Union and the United Kingdom reached a record 249,201, up 23.4 percent, and spending from those markets a record 335.7 million dollars, up 21.2 percent.

The two halves of the number

Total traveller visits in the first half were 3,050,173, down 3.3 percent. Tourist visits — the subset that stays overnight — were 2,272,964, up by 2,601 visits, or one tenth of one percent. In the second quarter alone, traveller visits fell 4.9 percent to 1,749,668, tourist visits 2.7 percent to 1,275,435, and revenue 3.8 percent to 1.1 billion dollars. The headline decline is driven by day and transit traffic more than by people who book a bed.

Where the growth came from

The European Union and United Kingdom together produced a record 249,201 visits, up 23.4 percent, and a record 335.7 million dollars, up 21.2 percent. China contributed 54,554 visits, up 16.7 percent, and Central Asia 115,416, up 3.1 percent. The Tourism Administration attributed the fall in the overall total to reduced flows from countries affected by regional conflicts and related air travel restrictions, and credited diversification and marketing with offsetting part of it.

Why the mix matters more than the total

A visitor from Hamburg and a visitor crossing a land border for the afternoon are counted in the same column and behave nothing alike. European visitors typically book accommodation in advance, travel outside July and August more readily, and spend on guided days and restaurants rather than on goods. For a guesthouse in Kazbegi or a small operator selling walking trips, a 23 percent rise in that market is worth more than the three percent fall in the overall figure costs them.

The connectivity behind it

The Tourism Administration counted 85 airlines operating 125 routes to Georgia, and singled out new Norwegian flights between Copenhagen and Tbilisi and China Eastern between Shanghai and Tbilisi. It also pointed to UN Tourism forecasts that global international travel growth could slow by three to four percent in 2026 depending on how long current conflicts last. Read together, the message is that Georgia's European gains are real but are being made in a year when the global tide is going out.
