Construction is the one sector going backwards in a growing economy

Preliminary Geostat estimates reported on 30 September put real GDP growth at 6.3% year on year in August, with growth for the first eight months of 2026 reported as 7.6%. Manufacturing, information and communication, finance and insurance, real estate activities, trade, and transport and storage were named as contributors. Construction was the exception, described as trending downward.
Why that one line matters most
Construction and real estate activities are not the same thing in national accounts, and here they moved in opposite directions: real estate activities contributed to growth while construction declined. Real estate activities capture the renting, buying and managing of existing stock; construction captures the building of new stock. A market where transactions are busy while building slows is a market working through what has already been built.
What this does and does not tell you
The report gives no percentage for any individual sector, construction included, so the direction is known and the magnitude is not. It is also a preliminary estimate, which is revised as fuller data arrives. Treat it as a signal about which way the building cycle is pointing, and look to permit counts, cement and materials data and developer launch announcements for the size of the move.
The read for someone putting money in
Two conclusions pull in different directions and both are defensible. A slowing pipeline eases the supply pressure that has been weighing on rents, which helps anyone already holding a finished unit. It also means the sector most exposed to a credit squeeze is already contracting while the economy around it grows, and that is the sort of divergence worth watching rather than celebrating. Neither reading is settled by one month of preliminary data.
