Anaklia is getting an 18-kilometre railway of its own, costed at about $200 million, with the tender due this month
The prime minister said on 9 October that the World Bank would help fund the line, and that the construction tender is expected before the end of October. The state builds the rail and the road; private partners build the terminals.
Eighteen kilometres, and a tender before the month is out
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Friday 9 October that the government plans an 18-kilometre railway serving the new deep-sea port at Anaklia, at an estimated cost of around $200 million, and that the World Bank would support it. He said the construction tender is expected by the end of October. A new road is planned alongside the line. Until now most of the public detail about Anaklia has been about the marine works — the breakwater and the dredging — rather than the land connections that decide whether cargo can actually move inland.
The state builds the ground, private partners build the business
Anaklia is being developed on what the sector calls a landlord model: the state builds and keeps ownership of the core infrastructure — breakwater, dredged channel, rail and road access — while private partners develop and run the individual terminals. That split is why the railway announcement matters more than it sounds. A terminal operator weighing a bid is pricing the risk that the state's side arrives late. A tender awarded this month, with a multilateral lender attached, is a harder commitment than a line on a plan. The seabed is slated to be deepened to about 17.5 metres, which is the figure that determines which class of ship can call.
What an owner on the western coast should take from it
The honest answer is: watch the tender, not the announcement. Port-adjacent property stories tend to run ahead of the construction, and Anaklia has been announced, cancelled and restarted before. What is different this time is the sequence: marine works already visibly underway, and now land access with a lender named and a date attached. If the tender is awarded in October as stated, the next things worth following are the award itself, the road alignment, and when terminal operators are invited in — those are the steps that turn a port into traffic, and traffic into demand for housing and services in Zugdidi, Poti and the villages between.
