An 18 km rail link to Anaklia goes to tender by the end of October
Speaking at a Railway Workers' Day event on 9 October, the prime minister said the government would announce a construction tender for the line connecting Anaklia port to the national rail network by the end of this month. He put the cost at around 200 million dollars for 18 kilometres and said the project is being developed with World Bank support.
What was actually said, and when
The commitment is to announce a tender, not to begin building. The 18-kilometre figure and the roughly 200 million dollar cost both come from the prime minister's remarks on 9 October. A separate report from mid-September, citing the economy minister, said the design had been finalised by Georgian Railway and that talks with international financial institutions were complete, with the tender expected by the end of October. As of today the month has days left in it, and the tender has not been reported as launched.
Why a port needs the last eighteen kilometres
A deep-sea port that cannot put containers on a train is a quay with lorries queued behind it. The rail spur is the piece that connects Anaklia to the east-west corridor through Georgia and onward across the Caspian, and it is why this short line carries a cost more usually associated with a long one. Breakwater construction and dredging are running in parallel, with a second dredging vessel reported on site, and the stated target is for the port to receive its first vessel in 2029.
What it means on the Samegrelo coast
For anyone holding land or looking at it near Anaklia, the sequence matters more than the headline. A tender announcement is the first point at which a project has a contractor, a price and a programme attached to it, and it is the first point at which land values in the corridor have something firm to respond to. It is also the point at which the route is fixed, which cuts both ways: being near a freight line is not the same as being near a port.
The railway's own housekeeping
In the same remarks the prime minister said Georgian Railway had revised its commercial and operational management, cut inefficient spending and saved 190 million lari, with further reforms planned before the end of the year. That is the state operator's own account of itself, offered at a staff event, and worth noting as context rather than as an audited result. The operator's condition matters here because it is the body that will run whatever gets built.
